Is Delta 9 Indica or Sativa?

May 31, 2023The nama Team

Delta 9 THC is the major psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. This cannabinoid is not classified as indica or sativa because Delta 9 is a chemical compound, not a cannabis strain.

Is Delta 9 Indica or Sativa?

Indica and sativa refer to different subspecies of the cannabis plant. Both indica and sativa plants contain levels of Delta 9 THC and other compounds.

What is Delta 9?

Delta 9 THC is the most well-known psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant (cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis rudelaris). This cannabinoid interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of neurotransmitters and receptors (CB1 and CB2) that play a critical role in maintaining physiological processes such as appetite stimulation, mood and emotional response, pain perception, sleep regulation, and immune responses.

Neurotransmitters (known as endocannabinoids in the ECS) interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors to initiate signaling. The receptors, in turn, initiate a cascade of biochemical effects.

CB1 receptors are primarily in the central nervous system and CB2 receptors are primarily in the peripheral nervous system.

Though Delta 9 THC is commonly associated with the high people experience when using recreational cannabis, it also has numerous potential medical benefits. Delta 9 interacts with the body the same way that our own endocannabinoids do, binding to the receptors to modulate their effects. The compound seems to have a strong affinity for the CB1 receptors, which explains its effects on altering one’s mood, appetite stimulation, promoting memory and learning functionality, and pain perception.

When binding to CB1 receptors, Delta 9 can help boost serotonin and activate dopamine in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood and anxiety. It can also improve sleep and digestion. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter known as the brain’s “reward pathway.” It plays a role in motivation and focus, often being released when we engage in pleasurable activities.

Delta 9 does bind to the CB2 receptors, which appears to be its contributing mechanism to chronic pain relief, inflammation relief, and immune function.

Is Delta 9 Indica or Sativa?

Because Delta 9 is a molecule, it is neither indica nor sativa. The cannabinoid can be found in both types of cannabis strains. Indica and sativa are terms used to categorize different strains of cannabis, representing distinct subspecies with varied characteristics. Research shows there are over 700 strains of cannabis. (Read our guide to learn more about sativa vs. indica edibles.)

What is Cannabis Indica?

Indica strains of cannabis are characterized by their short, bushy stature and broad, dark green leaves. They can grow anywhere between 2-4 feet in height with compact branches. This strain is typically associated with relaxing effects. People will often associate an indica strain with treating conditions like chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety.

What is Cannabis Sativa?

Sativa strains of cannabis are characterized by their tall, thin stature and narrow, pale green leaves. They can grow anywhere between 5-18 feet in height with few branches. This strain is typically associated with energizing effects. People will often associate a sativa strain with treating conditions like depression, nausea, and a lack of focus.

What is Cannabis Rudelaris?

Cannabis rudelaris is known as a wild or “feral” subspecies of cannabis. It is a short, bushy plant with few branches. It adapts to colder temperatures than sativa or indica strains and can resist harsh environments. This type of cannabis has not been well-researched and is not a strain of cannabis often used for consumption. It is known to have a very low THC content and higher concentrations of CBD.

Does Delta 9 Indica vs. Sativa Matter?

Cannabis researchers have blurred the distinction between indica and sativa. In a 2016 medical interview, psychopharmacology researcher Dr. Ethan Russo, MD, confirmed that the classifications of indica vs. sativa may not accurately predict the effects of a particular strain. The physical characteristics and leaf morphology of the plant are not enough to determine its biochemical content.

The effects of cannabis are influenced by a variety of important factors, including its cannabinoid and terpene profiles. According to Dr. Russo, it’s essential for accurate profiles of cannabinoid and terpene content to be available to consumers to determine the type of cannabis they’re using. A person’s physiology, tolerance, and personal preference also play a role in the way strains of cannabis will impact them.

Hybrid strains are a combination of both sativa, indica, and sometimes rudelaris subspecies, and are the preferred way to use cannabis extracts. They’re created by crossbreeding different strains to incorporate all of their desirable traits. This allows growers and consumers to experience a wider range of effects, flavors, and benefits.

Our collection of Delta 9 edibles is made with hybrid strains of terpene-rich extracts from American-grown, organic, non-GMO hemp. All of our cannabis products have been third-party lab tested for potency and quality assurance. We value transparency, so all of our lab results are available for you to check out our products’ content profiles.

Is Delta 9 Indica or Sativa Better for Sleep?

Indica strains are traditionally known for relaxing and calming effects that promote sleep. Northern Lights is a popular indica strain offering a body-centered, sedative high. When using cannabis for sleep, it’s best to consider the cannabinoid content in your Delta 9 products instead of whether it’s indica vs. sativa.

Paying attention to sativas and indicas may not be the best indication of how you’ll feel. Indica strains could be high in THC content. Even though indicas have relaxing and sedative effects, high concentrations of Delta 9 THC could negatively impact sleep.

Taking THC can quicken sleep onset and prevent sleep disruption. But it’s important to note that THC is dose-dependent. High doses of THC could cause adverse effects on sleep. That’s why people microdose THC for sleep, so they can take ultra-low doses of the cannabinoid and still receive its benefits.

If you’re looking for chill vibes to tune out the noise, our Bliss Gummies with Delta 9 THC might be just what you need to meditate without meditating.

Studies have shown that many cannabinoids may potentially benefit sleep, especially when taken in combination with one another. CBN has sedative effects, too, helping people fall asleep and stay asleep longer. CBN is a minor cannabinoid in cannabis that is gaining popularity for having similar benefits to THC without the same intensity of psychoactive effects. (Read our guide to learn more about what CBN is good for.)

CBD vs. THC for sleep is the most debated because they’re the two most well-known compounds of the plant. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major non-psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis and can promote relaxation by modulating activity in the central nervous system to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. CBD interacts with the ECS a bit differently than THC and CBN do. Instead of binding directly to receptors, it has more indirect contact, “antagonizing” them.

Taking CBD and THC together might be the best option for sleep. CBD is known to downregulate the effects of THC when taken together, making THC a more tolerable substance. Look for a full-spectrum CBD product to aid your sleep cycle. These products contain a wide variety of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, including THC.

And we’ve got the perfect blend for you. Our Sleep Plus gummies are a full-spectrum product with low doses of THC, CBD, and melatonin. If you’re feeling unsure about using THC, our melatonin gummies for adults contain CBD, CBN, and melatonin—but no THC.

Is Delta 9 Indica or Sativa Better for Anxiety?

Hybrid strains are a popular choice for improving anxiety because they can promote relaxation without excessive sedation. Blue Dream is a popular hybrid strain known for creating a balance between relaxation and uplift. Sativa strains are traditionally known for boosting energy and offering an uplifting experience, which can also improve anxiety. Durban Poison is a sativa strain that promotes mental clarity and focus. (Read our guide for the best strains to use to reduce anxiety and improve focus.)

Delta 9 THC has anxiolytic properties that can reduce anxiety symptoms. Studies show that low doses of THC can also increase the release of dopamine and serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and is known as the “feel good” neurotransmitter. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is associated with reward and pleasure, contributing to feelings of satisfaction and well-being. The imbalance of these neurotransmitters could lead to medical conditions like depression and mood disorders.

Instead of focusing on whether your Delta 9 THC products for anxiety relief are sativa vs. indica, be aware of what cannabinoids and terpenes are present. Research concludes that terpenes with multiple cannabinoids are best for the treatment of anxiety disorders. This is because cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids are known to have a natural synergy referred to as the entourage effect. Though the validity of the entourage effect is still being researched, studies show that it seems to have some scientific validity.

Microdosing edibles for anxiety is the best way to go. If you’re looking to calm your mind to reduce anxiety symptoms, our Relax Plus Gummies are perfect for getting your zen on with low doses of THC.

Or, better yet, try our Energy Delta 9 THC Gummies. In a rich, all-natural blood orange flavor, these gummies contain low doses of THC for an uplifting boost, CBD for balance, B12 for your dose of energy, and L-theanine for focus and concentration.

Is Delta 9 Indica or Sativa Better for Pain?

Both indica and sativa strains have been known to provide pain-relieving effects. While sativa strains can improve daytime functionality for people who experience chronic pain, indica strains can induce physical relaxation to improve pain symptoms. White Widow is a hybrid strain known to offer soothing, physically relaxing effects on the body, so you can get the best of both strains.

Delta 9 gummies have been known to ease pain by interacting with the CB1 receptors to modulate pain perception and reduce pain sensitivity. THC also has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that microdosing THC for pain can benefit people with inflammatory conditions like multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

CBD has anti-inflammatory effects, too. CBD seems to have an affinity for the CB2 receptor which primarily focuses on regulating immune function and inflammatory responses. Some research suggests that CBN can also offer pain relief and has the potential to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Many individuals find that an equal ratio of THC and CBD is most effective for pain relief. Their working synergy can enhance each other’s pain-relieving effects. Check your products’ labels to see how much CBD vs. THC content is present, prioritizing whether it’s indica or sativa.

Our Euphoria Delta 9 THC Sour Gummies have a balanced ratio of THC and CBD for an uplifting, float-in-the-clouds type of experience.

How Can I Buy Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC products are available in a wide range of forms now that medical marijuana and hemp use are on the rise.

Here are some popular ways people are buying Delta 9 THC:

  • THC pre-rolls: These are marijuana or hemp flower pre-rolled joints that you smoke.
  • THC moon rocks: These are products consisting of THC flower dipped in or sprayed with cannabis oil and then coated with a layer of kief. Kief (trichome crystals) is a fine, powdery resin that covers cannabis buds. They’re generally used with a pipe or bowl but can be rolled and smoked in paper.
  • THC pills: These are capsules for oral consumption that make for a convenient, easy way to use cannabis. Perhaps you’re looking for a natural sleep aid with carefully curated cannabis blends. Try our Extra Strength Sleep Drops with CBD and THC.
  • THC edibles: These are cannabis-infused foods and sweet treats. They can come in the form of cakes, cookies, gummies, and other candy. Try our Elevate Delta 8 THC Gummies with bood-boosting effects in wild peach and passion fruit all-natural flavors.
  • THC drinks: These are cannabis-infused beverages. If you’re looking for a buzz without the hangover, try our THC drinks. They’re practically tasteless and can be added to any drink, including mocktails.

(Read our guide to learn where to buy Delta 9 gummies.)

Edibles could be considered the best option for cannabis consumption because they’re easy to dose and have long-lasting effects. It’s also a much healthier option than smoking cannabis and can be purchased in a wide range of options, flavors, and formulations.

What is the Difference Between Delta 8 and Delta 9?

Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC are both forms of THC found in the cannabis plant. A major difference between Delta 8 vs. Delta 9 is their chemical structures. Delta 8’s double bond is on the eighth carbon atom chain, whereas Delta 9’s is on the ninth carbon atom chain. This variation in their structure means there are some differences in how they interact with the ECS.

Delta 8 THC is about half as potent as Delta 9. This is because Delta 8 has less affinity for the CB1 receptor compared to Delta 9. Delta 8 does still bind to this receptor, increasing relaxation and offering pain relief, but it’s not as intense. This cannabinoid has also been used in medical cannabis for chemo-induced nausea and vomiting.

Start with our Elevate Delta 8 THC Gummies. These passion fruit and wild peach gummies are derived from hemp and made with natural ingredients. (Read our guide to learn whether Delta 8 or Delta 9 is better for you.)

Are there Side Effects of Using Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9’s effects and side effects depend on a variety of factors like tolerance, consumption method, frequency of use, and dosing. The effects of cannabis compounds like THC are known to be tolerable when taken in low doses.

It’s best to consider the benefits of microdosing THC. You can always increase your dose over time. Overconsumption of THC could lead to increased anxiety, rapid heart rate, dry mouth and eyes, and dizziness. These symptoms will most likely dissipate within a few hours.

All of our Delta 9 edibles are made with low doses of THC and offer you a proper dosing guide so you know you’re taking just the right amount.

Is Delta 9 THC Legal?

The 2018 Farm Bill created a legal distinction between marijuana and hemp production. Hemp-produced cannabis is now legal on the federal level because it contains no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight.

Delta 9 FAQ

Determining whether indica or sativa strains with Delta 9 are better depends on why you’re using cannabis and your desired effects. Indica strains are associated with relaxing and sedative effects. Sativa strains are associated with uplifting and energizing effects.

Delta 9 is a molecule present in both subspecies of indica and sativa strains. Delta 9 indica strains are known to induce calm and relaxing feelings. People might also use indica-dominant hybrid strains that contain some sativa properties.

Maui Wowie is a popular sativa strain that induces happiness and creativity. Super Silver Haze is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain that has potent energizing effects. Sour Diesel is also a sativa-dominant hybrid strain that is a great choice for daytime users. Amnesia Haze is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain known for creative sensations, euphoria, and strong psychoactive effects.

The best option is our Energy Delta 9 THC gummies. This hybrid, terpene-rich hemp extract offers you an uplifting boost to keep you going throughout the day.

The high you experience from Delta 9 is dose-dependent. Just 5 mg of THC can offer mild euphoria without crossing the “high” threshold.

Indica strains of cannabis are best known for their relaxing sedative effects. If you’re looking for a high-quality, well-tolerable sleep aid, try our CBD gummies for sleep

Both indicas and sativas could have high THC content. Indica and sativa generally refer to the plant’s physical characteristics and growth patterns. However, it’s difficult to determine whether the strain will have more or less THC based on these characteristics.
