Is Delta 9 THC Safe?

May 23, 2023The nama Team

Studies show that low doses of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9 THC) can improve health in many ways. Microdosing cannabis is generally safe for most people, although you should consult your own doctor about your specific physical condition and whether consuming Delta 9 is right for you.

Is Delta 9 THC Safe?

Our Delta 9 edibles are a safe way of consuming Delta 9 and allow you to enjoy the benefits of microdosing THC. These delicious hemp-derived products contain low amounts of THC that can alleviate chronic pain, help with sleep and eating disorders, and treat a variety of medical conditions.

Plus, our edibles are Federally legal!

What is Delta 9 THC?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 9 THC) is one of many cannabinoids found in cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. In addition to Delta 9, cannabis plants are rich in other cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD), CBG, CBN, Delta 8 THC, and many more.

Delta 9 can make users “high” at higher doses via interactions with our body’s cannabinoid receptors. At lower doses—such as those contained in our Delta 9 gummies—it causes a mild buzz, accompanied by feelings of relaxation or light euphoria.

What Does Delta 9 Do to Our Brain?

Delta 9 affects our endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of signals and receptors that regulate important bodily functions. The main interaction between Delta 9 THC and the ECS occurs via two primary cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors can be found in several brain regions, while CB2 is more common in immune cells.

At higher doses, Delta 9’s stimulation of CB1 receptors produces psychoactive effects. At lower, sub-psychoactive doses, Delta-9 THC products can have a number of potential benefits.

  • Pain relief
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased appetite
  • Improved sleep
  • Less inflammation

Delta 9 THC products can help people who suffer from insomnia regulate their sleeping patterns. For additional information, read our article on how low doses of Delta 9 THC can help you sleep better.

Delta 9 microdosing also seems to promote neurogenesis, slow brain aging, and improve symptoms of dementia.

What is The Entourage Effect?

THC is often combined with CBD to produce the so-called entourage effect. Cannabidiol seems to soften the psychotropic effects of THC and downregulate its impact on CB1 and CB2 receptors. When taken together, therapeutic properties of THC are enhanced by CBD’s presence, and vice versa.

There are many ways to produce the entourage effect. Full spectrum CBD products contain THC, CBD, and other minor cannabinoids. With our full spectrum gummies, you can experience all the medicinal and recreational benefits of Delta 9 and CBD.

If you want to refrain from products containing THC, broad spectrum CBD gummies are the right edibles for you. They produce a version of the entourage effect, just without the presence of Delta 9. Broad spectrum gummies combine CBD with other beneficial cannabis extracts, like CBN and CBG.

Effects of Delta 9 THC

Consuming Delta 9 THC at higher doses can produce any of the following temporary side effects in some users, while other users may not experience any of them.

  • Dry mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Increased appetite
  • Anxiety
  • Slow reaction times
  • Sedation
  • Paranoia

There has never been a recorded case of death from cannabis overdosing, even at higher doses.

At low doses, Delta 9 THC can have all sorts of beneficial impacts—without the downsides of higher doses.

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Increase focus and perception
  • Induce relaxation, relax the muscles and nerves
  • Relieve pain and reduce inflammation in the body
  • Fight insomnia and sleep disorders

The effects of Delta 9 depend on the method of consumption and the amount you’ve taken, as well as other factors like genetics, metabolism, body mass index (BMI), and more. Ingested cannabis (edibles) can take up to two hours to feel any effects, but once the effects kick in, they can last up to 12 hours.

In addition, Delta 9 can be detected in urine for 3-15 days, depending on the dosage and frequency of consumption. For additional information, check our guide on how long the effects on Delta 9 edibles last.

Is Delta 9 Safe to Use?

Our Delta 9 THC edibles are safe and have little risk to your health. Higher doses of THC can cause psychotropic effects, and inhaled (smoked) cannabis has carcinogens, but low-dose edibles have only benefits.

According to 2022 research, micro doses of THC (less than 1 mg per kg) seem to have significantly improved the spatial learning performance in aged mice with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Hemp-derived Delta 9 THC has potential benefits to our nervous system: microdosing cannabis can reverse brain aging and improve memory.

A 2019 clinical trial indicated that microdoses (7.5mg) of Delta 9 THC can significantly reduce self-reported emotional stress. In contrast, a higher dose (12.5mg) of Delta 9 THC increased stress and negative mood in the participants. The results of the trial suggest that low doses of THC can have subjective stress-relieving properties, whereas higher doses produce the opposite effects.

Microdosing Delta 9 is safe for everyday use. The key is to find the right dose and product for your needs and to stick with it. Ultimately, microdosing is a journey based on trial and error. If you feel you’re not getting the desired effects from a cannabis product, try increasing the dose slightly.

Benefits of Delta 9 THC

Delta 9 has shown to help treat multiple medical conditions and their symptoms. Low doses of THC can treat migraines, chronic pain, and inflammation. A 2015 study suggests that low doses of THC can treat various types of pain: neuropathic, sciatic, arthritic, and cancer pain.

Delta 9 Fights Inflammation

THC seems to help protect nerve cells from damage. Its neuroprotective properties may help people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to create neurons and prevent disease deterioration. Low doses of THC reduce inflammation in the body, which can also relieve chronic pain and improve autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Delta 9 also shows promise in helping irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn’s disease. Bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease involve a plethora of painful symptoms, from abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea to weight loss and fatigue. As prescribed medications often come with more side effects than relief, many sufferers have turned to microdosing cannabis.

Delta 9 at optimal low doses has virtually no side effects and can successfully treat many inflammatory conditions like gout, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, and others.

Delta 9 and Cancer

More studies seem to confirm Delta 9’s beneficial effects in treating not only cancer pain but also the disease itself. Apparently, THC and CBD have anti-proliferation and antimetastatic properties.

One medically reviewed study proposed that THC can slow the process of cancer proliferation (the rapid growth and division of cancer cells).

A clinical study on cannabinoids as anti-cancer agents found that THC can also block metastasis, preventing cancer cells from spreading to and infecting healthy cells.

Low doses of THC can treat prostate cancer by promoting apoptosis (cancer cell death). Via a little-understood interaction with CB2 receptors, cannabis seems to inhibit cancer growth. Research also shows that THC—in combination with CBD—can successfully inhibit the blood supply to prostate cancer cells, preventing them from developing new blood vessels.

One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial determined that 2.5 mg of Delta 9 THC successfully improved chemosensory (taste and smell) perception, appetite, and caloric intake for cancer patients. The trial concluded that THC may be used as a way to improve food enjoyment for people undergoing chemotherapy.

These findings are significant in promoting men’s health and women’s health equally. Beneficial properties of Delta 9 can aid breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other types of carcinomas.

Does Delta 9 Affect Memory?

Some studies suggest that low Delta 9 doses can aid brain function and restore learning and memory. One such study on older mice, a single dose of Delta 9 THC increased levels of Sirtuin1, an enzyme involved in neuroprotection and neuroplasticity.

Further evidence suggests that Delta 9 THC promotes neurogenesis (creation of neurons), treats cognitive impairments caused by inflammation, and restores memory and cognitive function. THC improves neurological function when administered regularly at low concentrations.

A different study on the effects of cannabis on memory shows that THC at low doses can treat dementia and other memory-affecting illnesses like Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s. Researchers found that low doses of THC can slow or even reverse brain aging.

Does Delta 9 Increase Dopamine?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is involved in increasing levels of dopamine. A group of Dutch scientists have discovered that Delta 9 THC stimulates the release of dopamine, which is instrumental in feelings of euphoria, happiness, satisfaction, mood, and motivation.

These findings allow researchers to explore effects of THC in neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Our blood orange THC gummies are a custom blend of energy-promoting nutrients that keep you uplifted throughout the day. 25 mg of CBD combined with 5 mg of THC seem to have the best results when it comes to treating depressive and anxious disorders.

Does Delta 9 Increase Serotonin?

Many people microdose cannabis to improve mood, calm nerves, and increase serotonin. Did you know that low Delta 9 doses can boost serotonin levels in our brain? This “feel-good” hormone is responsible for sleep, digestion, wound healing, bone health, and sexual desire. Keeping serotonin levels optimal is important for our body’s normal functioning—and to keep us feeling happy.

As their name suggests, our Bliss Gummies will help increase serotonin and improve mood. Delta 9 is there to lift your spirits, while CBD brings the chill.

Delta 9, Anxiety, and Depression

Because medical cannabis has therapeutic properties on our central nervous system, Delta 9 THC can successfully reduce stress levels. Microdosing edibles can help with anxiety. Low doses of cannabis can treat depression and bipolar disorder, as well.

Research conducted at University of Washington indicates that Delta 9 can successfully decrease anxiety without adverse effects. In contrast, higher THC amounts seem to amplify anxious conditions.

Researchers from University of Washington maintain that a combination of THC and CBD offers the best results. CBD can decrease stress and anxiety at any dose.

Feeling tense? Try our Hemp Euphoria Gummies! These fruit-filled, flavor-packed edibles contain an equal CBD to THC concentrations, just enough to ensure an uplifting, mildly euphoric experience.

Delta 9 and Eating Disorders

Delta 9 THC can aid people suffering from anorexia, cachexia (wasting syndrome), and other forms of eating disorder. Microdosing THC may be a promising treatment for anorexia due to its ability to stimulate appetite and contribute to weight management.

Small doses of THC have shown to promote appetite by binding to receptors in our brain responsible for hunger. Low doses of Delta 9 and other cannabinoids can also help with frequent side effects of anorexia, like anxiety, weight loss, nausea, and vomiting.

Ways to Consume Delta 9

There are many ways to consume Delta 9 THC. However, not every method of consumption is considered safe. Let’s look into the most popular ways to get your daily dose of Delta 9.

Smoking Cannabis

Smoked cannabis is probably the most popular way to consume Delta 9. It’s easy to use and gives the fastest results, although it clears from the body equally fast.

Yet, smoking weed might not be the safest microdosing method. It’s difficult to measure the exact amount of THC or other cannabinoids you’re inhaling.

In addition, a popular way to smoke cannabis is to roll your own cigarette by mixing small amounts of marijuana with tobacco. This method is far from ideal because of the negative effects of tobacco on our health. Other compounds, toxic or otherwise, found in tobacco can increase the risk of lung cancer or serious respiratory problems.

Drinking Cannabis

Drinking cannabis provides a convenient way to enjoy THC. Our THC drinks are the perfect alcohol alternative for your next party! They contain low doses of Delta 9—only 2 mg per drop—that provide a milder cannabis experience.

THC beverages are a great way to control your intake and make sure you don’t accidentally consume more than intended.

If you’re thinking about including low-dose THC products to your daily routine but you’re not sure which method to choose, check out our guide on the differences between edibles and THC drinks.

Cannabis Tinctures

Tinctures are another popular and convenient way to consume THC. Cannabis tinctures are usually sold in 15 or 30 milliliter bottles. THC concentrations vary depending on the brand.

The thing about this method of consumption is that it is often difficult and time-consuming to calculate how much Delta 9 is found in 1 ml or one full dropper of the fluid. This makes cannabis tinctures a complex and unreliable way of microdosing THC accurately.

Edibles

Microdosing edibles includes any consumable products (gummies, chocolates, etc.) with low amounts of THC. They do take longer to kick in. As they go down the digestive tract, you can feel the effects only after the product is digested, which can take between 30 minutes to two hours.

THC edibles are an easy and safe way to get your daily dose of cannabis because gummies contain precise doses of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. Edibles typically have more than two cannabinoids, whose combined therapeutic properties have more benefits on our health than each compound in isolation. (Remember the entourage effect?)

We recommend our THC gummies as a perfect introduction to microdosing. They contain not only Delta 9 THC but other beneficial cannabis compounds—cannabidiol, CBN, CBG, CBC, terpenes, flavonoids—that can promote homeostasis and aid with many medical conditions.

Delta 9 Side Effects

Marijuana users often report side effects from smoked cannabis or after taking excessive THC doses. In contrast, our low-dose THC edibles do not contain enough Delta 9 to produce adverse effects.

Some of the most common side effects of Delta 9 at higher doses are:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Sedation
  • Paranoia and hallucinations
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Panic attack
  • Dry mouth

How Much Delta 9 Will Get You High?

Some people can start to feel a mild Delta 9 high with 10 mg, while most cannabis users require 20 mg or more to feel a significant high. Microdosing users that take between 2.5 and 10mg of THC usually feel a mild uplift in mood, accompanied by lowered stress and increased relaxation.

Take our Bliss Gummies, for example. They contain 5mg of hemp-derived Delta 9 THC and 5mg of CBD. A single gummy of this delicious vegan edible is a perfect dose to reap the benefits of microdosing cannabis without getting high.

Since experiencing the high depends largely on the dosage, it might be a good idea to know for sure how much THC is in the Delta 9 gummies you’re taking. All our gummies are clearly labeled with the amount of Delta 9, CBD, and other substances they contain.

Does Delta 9 Have Long-Term Effects?

Consuming Delta 9 THC at low doses has no known long-term negative effects on microdosing individuals.

Some research did find that prolonged high-dosage abuse of Delta 9 THC during adolescence may produce long-term behavioral issues in girls. Hemp-derived Delta 9 is not recommended for individuals younger than 21 years of age and its use is forbidden by federal law.

Is Delta 9 Addictive?

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, some people who consume cannabis regularly can develop marijuana use disorder, making them unable to stop using. One study estimates that approximately 3 in every 10 people who consume marijuana develop marijuana use disorder.

Adolescents who consume higher doses of Delta 9 more frequently have greater potential risks of developing addiction. At lower doses, Delta 9 is not addictive and can even help with withdrawal symptoms from other types of addiction (e.g., alcohol, drug abuse).

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a rare condition that involves repeated and severe nausea and vomiting, alongside abdominal pain.

Despite its ability to suppress feelings of nausea and vomiting in cancer and chemotherapy patients, Delta 9 seems to have the opposite effect on daily long-term marijuana users at high doses. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome occurs only in people who have been consuming higher amounts of cannabis every day for several years.

In a book titled Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, Italian researchers claim that cannabis has a unique ability to express both pro- and anti-emetic properties. Its interaction with cannabinoid receptors to mediate vomiting typically provides relief from nausea. The researchers also suggest that CHS may result from “chronic overstimulation of endocannabinoid receptors,” often leading to a disruption in the body’s control of nausea and vomiting.

Some individuals suffering from cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome have admitted to smoking 2000 mg of THC per day. Low THC concentrations are crucial in preventing cyclical vomiting and abdominal pain caused by this condition. Low-dose cannabis products are unlikely to cause CHS or have other adverse effects—and are likely to improve nausea and vomiting, rather than exacerbating it.

Is Delta 9 THC Legal?

Delta 9 is legal on a federal level, provided that the cannabis products containing it are compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill. For a product to be Farm Bill compliant, Delta 9 THC must be derived from hemp, not marijuana, and THC concentrations must not exceed 0.3% by dry weight.

Marijuana-derived Delta 9 THC is legal in some US states, but still illegal on a federal level. All nama CBD cannabis products are compliant with the Farm Bill, making our Delta 9 edibles federally legal.

People are often confused: how is Delta 9 THC legal when marijuana isn’t? For more information, check out our guide to the differences between hemp and marijuana.

Is CBD Legal?

Cannabidiol is also compliant with the Farm Bill and legal on a federal level if the THC content does not exceed 0.3% of Delta 9 by dry weight and if derived from hemp. CBD products—like CBD oil—are federally illegal if extracted from marijuana.

Try our vegan CBD gummies to taste flavor-packed ingredients and the highest quality pure American hemp.

Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 8 THC) is a form of THC found in the cannabis plant at lower concentrations. Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC both bind to the cannabinoid receptors in the ECS, but unlike Delta 9, Delta 8 THC does not produce euphoric feelings even at higher doses.

It is generally believed that Delta 9 THC produces stronger effects than Delta 8. That’s why it’s often referred to as “Delta 9’s nicer younger sibling.” Delta 8 THC has milder effects than Delta 9. That’s what makes Delta 8 gummies a perfect choice for those new to microdosing.

Delta 8 THC is great for microdosing because it relieves pain without interfering with the users’ ability to perform daily activities. It also affects our nervous system by inducing relaxation and reducing stress. Microdosing users often experience improvements in mental health and relief from nausea and vomiting after consuming low doses of Delta 8.

Try our Delta 8 THC products, like our Elevate Gummies, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of Delta 9’s nicer younger sibling.

Check out our article on the differences between Delta 8 and Delta 9 for additional information.

One of the potential benefits of Delta 9 THC is its ability to help individuals struggling with sleep disorders fall asleep. At low doses, THC can aid sleep by reducing symptoms of various medical conditions that interrupt healthy sleep patterns (e.g., depression, anxiety, autoimmune illnesses).

The best way to microdose Delta 9 for sleep is to combine it with CBD and small amounts of melatonin. Our sleep gummies with CBD are a great option for people struggling to maintain normal sleeping patterns.

Yes, hemp-derived Delta 9 THC will make you fail a drug screen that tests for THC, even though the THC product is derived from hemp. If you’re having a drug test coming up soon, refrain from taking marijuana or hemp products for about a month beforehand.

Pure cannabidiol (CBD) made from the hemp plant will not result in a positive drug test. However, if there is a product that contains traces of THC, it could cause a positive test.

Cannabidiol extracts should have no more than 0.3% hemp-derived THC by dry weight to maintain legality by federal law.

When it comes to storing Delta 9 THC gummies, always purchase small quantities. This way, your Delta 9 gummies will stay fresh and potent.

When stored properly, Delta 9 THC products can last for months or even years. Environmental factors like heat, light, and moisture could cause your edibles to degrade quickly, so it's important to keep them in a dry, cool place.

If you live in a state where medical cannabis is legal and you have a medical marijuana card, you can buy Delta 9 THC products at a cannabis dispensary near you.

If you don't have a medical marijuana card, don't live in a state where medical cannabis is legal, or don't want to drive to a Mary Jane dispensary, you can get our Delta 9 edibles delivered right to your door. These fruit-flavored edibles with Delta 9 THC are the ideal way to microdose Delta 9!
