8 reasons to use cannabis edibles for mental health

Our low-dose THC gummies aren’t just delicious, their therapeutic effects may be beneficial for mental health. People who microdose cannabis report significant relief from depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, obsessive thoughts, chronic stress, and even seasonal affective disorder.

The secret is in the dosage. While small amounts of THC and CBD may improve aspects of your mental health, higher doses may have the opposite effect. That’s the beauty of microdosing cannabis.

If you want the best edibles on this side of the Atlantic, shop from nama. Our low-dose gummies and THC beverages are made from organically grown hemp, lab-tested for purity and potency, and infused with real fruit.

What are cannabis edibles?

Edibles are a type of cannabis product that contains small amounts of cannabinoids such as Delta 9 THC, cannabidiol (CBD), and other compounds extracted from the cannabis plant. They are infused into chewy, flavorful candies, making their soft, flavourful texture perfect for those who don’t enjoy smoking.

Our cannabis edibles can get you high, or a little buzzed, depending on how much you take. If you stick to the recommended low doses, you’re unlikely to experience any overwhelming highs. But if you take two, three, or more gummies at once, the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in them may produce intense euphoria, sedation, and altered consciousness, characteristic of being “high.” It’s best to start with minimal doses.

That’s why our low-dose edibles are the way to go. Among all the ways to microdose Delta 9, our gummies are the best. Here’s why:

  • They are reliable in delivering a measured dose of cannabinoids.
  • Our edibles contain only small doses of cannabis, between 2 and 10 milligrams of THC and up to 25 milligrams of CBD per gummy. (Anything below 10 mg of THC is considered a low-dose product, while 2 mg of THC is a microdose.)
  • Our gummies deliver a much slower yet more sustained experience than other consumption methods. You can feel the effects of THC gummies within 30 to 120 minutes
  • The effects of low-dose gummies will last up to eight hours for most people (although it depends on several factors such as the THC concentration, your metabolism, and your genetic makeup).
  • Our edibles are free from artificial ingredients or preservatives, having undergone rigorous third-party lab tests for purity and potency.
  • Our edibles are super delicious.

Some of our Delta 9 products are fast-acting. Thanks to a unique relaxation-promoting blend of cannabinoids and terpenes, our Relax Plus gummies with only 5 mg of THC can achieve results in only 15 minutes. They deliver a pleasurable buzz and potentially alleviate stress and anxiety without any adverse effects.

"I use it to calm down my ADHD. I'm more able to focus on tasks. I use half a gummy everyday."

Can edibles promote mental health?

Due to their low but effective THC content, Delta 9 gummies can have a wide range of effects and potential benefits. THC interacts with the endocannabinoid system in your body to produce both therapeutic and potentially psychoactive effects.

Each of us has an endocannabinoid system (ECS)–a complex network of chemical signals and receptors that maintain homeostasis. It regulates a wide range of bodily functions, such as:

  • Sleep
  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Stress response
  • Inflammation
  • Memory
  • Digestion
  • Pain perception
  • Bone formation
  • Reproductive health

The ECS helps govern some of the body’s most vital processes associated with mood and mental health, including modulating brain signaling linked to depression, anxiety, stress response, and overall emotional stability.

Why is the endocannabinoid system important for mental health?

The endocannabinoid system plays a key role in regulating mood, emotions, and overall mental health, primarily through controlling serotonin and dopamine activity alongside the HPA axis. Let us explain:

  • Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood. Low levels are linked to depression and anxiety. The ECS regulates serotonin activity, increasing uptake and recycling when levels are low. This elevates mood and eases depression.
  • Dopamine is another neurotransmitter that controls motivation, pleasure, and reward perceptions. It drives focus and productivity, which are vital for mental health and emotional well-being. The ECS modulates dopamine signaling, enhancing motivation and positivity to boost drive and focus.
  • The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the interconnected feedback loop between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands that regulates the body's reaction to stressors. The ECS helps to dull excessive stress reactions and calms the HPA stress pathway, preventing inflamed responses to triggers that harm mental health.

Disruptions to the endocannabinoid system lead to mood disorders, lack of motivation, inflammatory conditions, and poor stress resilience. This is where our low-dose edibles come in.

The ECS consists of endocannabinoids, enzymes that help break them down, and cannabinoid receptors. Exogenous cannabinoids that come from plants (like the cannabis plant) are called phytocannabinoids, but their functions and effects are quite similar to those our bodies produce.

As a phytocannabinoid, THC binds to both CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors to produce its effects. Its relationship with the CB1 receptor is mainly what enables THC to modulate pain perception, enhance mood, increase appetite, and boost memory function.

The best combination for alleviating many symptoms of mental health disorders is THC and CBD in low amounts. Entourage effect, anyone?

THC and CBD in the entourage effect

For some first-time or sensitive users, THC may produce stronger effects when taken on its own. But when you combine THC with CBD, CBD helps counteract the potential psychoactive effects of THC. This creates the so-called entourage effect, in which cannabis compounds enhance each other’s effects.

This cannabis synergy enables CBD to regulate the activation and signaling of cannabinoid receptors when THC is present in the system. Unlike THC, CBD can’t make you high, most likely because it does not bind to cannabinoid receptors in the ECS directly.

CBD has little binding affinity for either CB1 or CB2 receptors, but it is capable of antagonizing them in the presence of THC. In fact, CBD behaves as a non-competitive negative allosteric modulator of CB1 receptor, and it reduces the efficacy and potency of THC and AEA. CBD also regulates the perception of pain by affecting the activity of a significant number of other targets. (Vučković, et. al.)

To counteract the potential negative effects of consuming THC for those sensitive first-timers, we combine low-dose THC with balanced amounts of CBD. The best way to experience the entourage effect and all its benefits for mental health (and other health issues) is to try our full-spectrum CBD gummies. They all combine CBD and THC to increase each other’s benefits and outweigh the possible adverse effects.

Speaking of full-spectrum CBD, we have something for you that can produce the ultimate entourage effect with equal THC and CBD ratios. Meet our Bliss gummies, with only 5 mg of each cannabinoid, they synergistically soothe the anxious mind and bring out the mildest of euphoria.

Five milligrams of THC is a perfect dosage to counteract those racing thoughts, anxious minds, and stressful days.

Can cannabinoids be used as a treatment for mental disorders?

While cannabis-based treatments are not yet medically approved, emerging research indicates that small, controlled doses of THC and CBD may tune up the endocannabinoid system to promote mental health.

Here’s what we know so far:

  1. A 2012 study found that the endocannabinoid system regulates emotional reactions to stress and fear by controlling signaling between neurons that handle motivation, anxiety, and traumatic memories.
  2. According to researchers at the University of Washington, cannabinoids can modulate ECS activity, with THC potentially decreasing anxiety at lower doses and increasing it at higher doses. CBD appears to decrease anxiety across all tested doses.
  3. Australian researchers conclude that while anecdotal reports praise the mood-lifting benefits of cannabis, rigorous studies have yet to back up wider therapeutic claims beyond a reduction in anxiety symptoms for some medical patients.
  4. A 2021 study warns that cannabis could worsen outcomes for some illnesses such as psychosis or mood disorders, especially with higher THC doses.

Which is exactly why we stick to microdosing and our delectable THC gummies. Small, controlled amounts of cannabis can help manage the symptoms of mental disorders such as:

Anxiety disorders

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Separation anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Performance anxiety (stage fright)
  • Phobias

Stress-related disorders

Mood disorders

  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Seasonal affective disorder

Eating disorders

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge eating disorder

Let’s dig deeper into the effects of cannabis edibles on mental health.

One: cannabis edibles improve mood

Cannabis edibles can lift mood subtly, turning up those “feel-good” neurotransmitters. As these brain chemicals influence nearly every aspect of mental health and emotions, imbalances are linked to disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and addiction.

The right edible can brighten your outlook, quelling sadness, irritability, and hopelessness— exactly what our delicious Bliss gummies do. One gummy a day may help:

  • Increase serotonin, lifting mood and easing depression
  • Stimulate dopamine, enhancing motivation and drive
  • Modulate GABA, reducing anxiety and nervousness
  • Regulate glutamate, quieting obsessive thought patterns
  • Boost anandamide levels, relieving anxiety and pain

Two: cannabis edibles help ease anxiety

Several studies have shown the anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties of cannabis. Many conclude that balanced ratios of THC and CBD seem to have the best results. A 2020 study found that “cannabinoid therapies (containing primarily CBD) may provide a more suitable treatment for people with pre-existing anxiety or as a potential adjunctive role in managing anxiety or stress-related disorders.”

A 2022 study confirmed the “efficacy and tolerability of a full-spectrum, high-CBD product for anxiety.” THC and CBD don't eliminate anxiety, but rather gently mute the volume of distress signals. In microdoses, CBD calms excessive worry and THC quiets panic attacks by enhancing your body's ECS.

Three: microdosing cannabis reduces stress

When you're overwhelmed, cannabis edibles balance your stress reactions. Cannabinoids calm inflammatory stress pathways, so you respond to daily stressors more calmly.

Remember to stick to low doses, as those found in our THC-infused drinks and chews. Research does show that cannabis may exacerbate stress at higher doses. Both Delta 9 and cannabidiol seem to relieve stress in low amounts.

Explore CBD’s therapeutic effects on stress and anxiety

Though not a cure for all your worries, small amounts of THC and CBD foster healthy coping, resilience, and the ability to take daily stresses in stride. Shop our Relax Plus gummies infused with delicious watermelon and experience the chill.

Four: low-dose THC may quiet obsessive thought patterns

Stuck in obsessive loops and quiet rumination? We hear you. In moderation, THC may potentially help quiet the persistent and distressing thoughts typically experienced by individuals with OCD. Mauzay, et. al. found that participants in the study with OCD “reported a 60% reduction in compulsions, a 49% reduction in intrusions, and a 52% reduction in anxiety from before to after inhaling cannabis.”

We like those numbers—except that we would ditch smoking cannabis in favor of something safe, controlled, and super delicious. We don’t promise that our edibles will suddenly eliminate underlying OCD issues, but they may let you redirect energy once spent battling intrusions toward more meaningful living.

Five: edibles boost focus and motivation

Focus and motivation are critical for mental health. Without the ability to concentrate, you would struggle to turn intentions into actions. It’s a good thing that our low-dose cannabis edibles can boost your focus and productivity, helping you squeeze more out of your day.

Here’s how:

  • THC boosts dopamine which is associated with drive and focus. A 2016 study shows that by increasing dopamine and activating the brain's mood and reward pathways, THC can enhance focus, lower stress, and stimulate productivity.
  • Through still unclear mechanisms, low-dose cannabis seemingly helps redirect scattered minds and feel inspired to check things off to-do lists.
  • Sativa strains may replicate caffeine's buzz while quieting thoughts, allowing immersive flow states. Many of our satisfied customers use our delicious edibles to boost productivity and channel focus toward their goals.

Order our finest Energy gummies to keep anxiety at bay, boost dopamine, and pave the way for locked-in concentration.

"I have already ordered the 20 pack after trying the 10 gummies. THC makes me sleepy 90% of the time. These don't! I love the flexibility of being to take them anytime of the day. They give me a great subtle calm and focus. I'm looking forward to trying two at once."

Six: THC and CBD may help soothe fear and trauma

People plagued with traumatic memories know how fear and trauma can stalk the mind and steal attention from the now. Our microdosed cannabis edibles may help convince your nervous system that the past can’t harm you in the present.

Research suggests that THC may help diminish the emotional intensity associated with anxiety and traumatic memory in people with PTSD, while CBD seems to enhance memory consolidation and help your brain hold onto important information more effectively.

Our bite-sized treats can unwind distressing mental loops, restore feelings of safety, and provide respite for exhausted nervous systems strained by hypervigilance. Whether it’s PTSD, debilitating phobias, or panic attacks, microdoses offer gentle relief from being perpetually haunted without sedation or fuzziness.

Seven: microdosing cannabis promotes sleep

Quality sleep is crucial for mental health. During sleep, we consolidate memories, integrate learning, and rejuvenate. Conditions such as anxiety, PTSD, and depression frequently disrupt rest. Microdosed THC is here to help, promoting deep, restorative sleep by quieting stirred-up thoughts and promoting relaxation.

A 2019 trial review found that CBD and THC help people fall asleep faster, sleep more soundly through the night, and feel more refreshed upon waking. In a large double-blind trial, over 75% of participants reported improved rest after taking CBD, with or without melatonin and other components of cannabis.

Our Sleep Plus gummies pack 25 mg of slumber-inducing CBD with melatonin and a pinch of THC infused into a dreamy blackberry flavor. These vegan treats are powerfully formulated to tame insomnia and other sleep disorders, so you can finally sleep soundly without morning grogginess.

Eight: low-dose THC and CBD can suppress pain

Chronic pain can exacerbate or cause mental health issues. When the body continually hurts, emotional reserves get drained coping with the constant discomfort. Many people turn to cannabis edibles as a potential way to relieve pain without unwanted side effects or tolerance build-up that can occur with other medications.

A 2015 study revealed that THC disrupts brain signaling that processes pain. This allows microdoses to reduce many chronic pain types—from arthritis and sciatica to migraines—without mental fogginess. As unrelenting pain erodes mental health over time, relief in the form of our THC gummies can help you blunt those pain signals and stay grounded.

Are sativa or indica edibles better for mental health?

Sativa and indica are the two main types of cannabis plants. They differ in chemical profiles that produce distinct effects. Sativas have higher THC levels, giving energizing, uplifting mental effects. Indicas possess more relaxing, sedating qualities with higher CBD balancing their THC content.

For mental health, balanced THC and CBD products, or slightly sativa-leaning hybrids tend to work best without causing impairment. Bear in mind that heavily sedating indicas could worsen depression, while too much THC risks paranoid reactions in some anxiety-prone individuals. Always stick to low doses—namely our delicious edibles that combine the best of both strains.

If you want to experience calmness without a buzz, check out our collection of CBD gummies without THC. But if you want gentle stimulation, lowered depressed or anxious moods, and more focused states of mind, order our THC and CBD gummies

Edibles for mental health FAQ

Delta 9 edibles have a relatively long shelf life compared to other food items, but they too can expire. Expired edibles won’t make you sick, but you’ll find them considerably less potent and juicy. Over time, the THC and CBD in them can degrade, but if you store them properly in a cool, dark place, our gummies can maintain potency and taste for up to 24 months.

After that, you may notice they’ve begun to fade in color and flavor. Dryness, mold, odors, or condensation inside the package means it’s best to discard the edibles.

For the best experience, enjoy your properly stored cannabis treats within the first two years and order fresh when they expire. If you’re unsure about the quality of your expired gummies, it's best to throw them out and order fresh from nama.

Proper storage of your edibles is key to keeping them tasty and potent for longer. Whether you incorporate cannabis gummies into your daily routine or just take them occasionally, you want to avoid spoilage and keep them fresh at all times.

Here are some of our tips and tricks for proper storage to maintain the freshness, safety, and potency of your favorite THC gummies.

  1. Wrap your edibles with parchment paper to create a protective barrier against air, moisture, and light. This prevents the degradation of potency over time and maintains the intended texture and flavor.
  2. Freeze edibles properly wrapped or in airtight containers to extend shelf life to over a year. This puts degradation on hold, protecting potency, safety, and quality.
  3. Use airtight containers such as glass jars or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids to limit contact with oxygen and humidity. Exposure leads to lower potency and causes edibles to dry out and harden.
  4. Keep edibles in a cool, dark, dry area. To slow the deterioration of active cannabinoids and terpenes, the ideal storage areas for edibles are dark spaces with consistent temperatures around 60-70° F and minimal humidity.
  5. Keep temperatures stable to avoid condensation inside containers. The moisture from temperature shifts causes chemical changes and potency loss. If you’re taking out edibles from the freezer, let them defrost gradually before consuming them to prevent moisture issues.
  6. Label storage containers with prep or packaging dates to track shelf life. Go by expiration dates, but track freeze dates separately.

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, known as the 2018 Farm Bill, drew a legal distinction between hemp and marijuana, and legalized Delta 9 THC products on a federal level in the US, provided they meet the following conditions:

  1. The THC concentration in products has to be 0.3% or below by dry weight
  2. The Delta 9 THC has to be extracted from hemp, not marijuana

All our Delta 9 gummies are federally legal because they meet the criteria of the 2018 Farm Bill.

Most states have adopted Farm Bill criteria into their own legislation. As of November 2022, only Kansas and Idaho have banned all forms of Delta 9, which means that our delicious gummies can be sold in 48 states.

For more info, check out our state-by-state guide on the legality of Delta 9 to make sure our delicious cannabis products are legal in your state.

Cannabinoids can be used to treat several medical conditions, including:

  • Pain management
  • Nausea and vomiting reduction in chemotherapy patients
  • Muscle spasticity treatment in conditions such as multiple sclerosis
  • Appetite stimulation in cancer and HIV and AIDS patients
  • Anxiety and PTSD management
  • Seizure disorder treatment
  • Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

In some jurisdictions where medical cannabis is legal, mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and others may qualify for a medical card. This typically involves consultation with a health care provider who can evaluate your condition, provide relevant documentation, and issue a recommendation or prescription if appropriate.

To obtain a medical card for mental health, you typically need to undergo a consultation with a healthcare provider who is authorized to recommend medicinal cannabis. During the consultation, the healthcare provider will assess the individual's condition, medical history, and treatment needs to determine if cannabis is a suitable option. If deemed appropriate, the healthcare provider may issue a recommendation or prescription for medicinal cannabis, allowing the individual to apply for a medical card or registration with the relevant regulatory agency.

While some studies suggest that certain cannabinoids, particularly CBD, may promote neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells) in specific contexts, the evidence is still limited and inconclusive. More research is needed to fully understand the effects of cannabis use on neurogenesis and their potential therapeutic benefits.

Combining CBD with antidepressants should be approached cautiously and under medical supervision. CBD can interact with certain antidepressants, potentially affecting their metabolism and efficacy. It's essential to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the safety and appropriateness of combining CBD with antidepressant medication.

Serotonin syndrome is typically reversible and resolves once the causative agents are discontinued and supportive care is provided. Permanent damage from serotonin syndrome is rare but theoretically possible in severe cases, particularly if complications such as prolonged seizures or organ failure occur. Prompt medical intervention is crucial to prevent complications and facilitate a full recovery.

Low-THC edibles are often preferred for anxiety, as CBD has potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects without the intoxicating effects associated with THC. Relaxing herbal blends or slow-release formulations may also complement the anxiolytic effects of cannabinoids. It's essential to choose lab-tested products from reputable manufacturers and start with a low dose to determine individual tolerance and preferences.

Edibles, especially those containing THC, can affect emotions due to factors such as dose and potency, individual sensitivity, mindset and environment, expectations and anxiety, interactions with other substances, and personal vulnerabilities. THC's psychoactive effects can amplify existing emotional states and lead to heightened sensitivity or mood swings.

To feel better after consuming edibles, stay calm, hydrate, and nourish yourself. Change your environment to a comfortable and supportive one, distract yourself with enjoyable activities, and practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation. Remember that the effects of edibles are temporary and will eventually pass. If distress persists or worsens, seek support from a trusted friend or healthcare professional.
